Multiply: Numeracy Skills for Adults

Whether you are aged 19-99, if you’re looking to boost your confidence with numbers and polish up your maths skills, our new Multiply courses can get you to where you want to be.

Multiply is a national government funded programme aimed to level up opportunities for more people by increasing their confidence with numbers. We deliver the national programme in Leicestershire, which has received £3 million in government funding, to provide hundreds of free courses and courses and support over the next three years. Our courses can help you build your numeracy skills in order to: improve your job prospects, support yourself through life changes, help your children with school work, and feel more confident managing your household budgets.

What Courses do Multiply offer?

  • Cook, Meet & Eat – This 4-week course for 2.5 hours per week, will develop your confidence in cooking and develop your everyday maths skills, as well as help you find ways to reduce food costs and be able to find the best deals to beat the cost-of-living crisis, plus you get to take the food home once you have cooked it.
  • Save, Taste, Zero Waste course – This 2-hour session will enable you to reduce your food waste and food costs. You will do a blind taste test and compare the costs of assorted brands; the most expensive option is not always the favourite! You will find out about the scale and cost of food waste and will learn about best before and use by dates and ideas for storing and using food leftovers creatively.
  • Keeping Tab of Costs Course – Learn how to use a tablet or computer to keep track of household expenses. Understand the difference between essential and optional expenses and prioritise them to see what is left for extras such as leisure activities.

Am I eligible for a Multiply course?

To be eligible for a Multiply course, you need to be over the age of 19 and not already have a Maths GCSE (or equivalent) at grade C/4 or above. If you do already have a GCSE qualification in Maths, but feel that you have lost some of the maths skills you need in everyday life, then you will still be eligible to join a Multiply course.

Anyone who fits the criteria is eligible for help from Multiply, with a particular focus on supporting hard-to-reach learners and those who may not traditionally engage with adult learning courses.

Where can I learn?

Courses are available across Leicestershire, in person or online, at work or at home, and either on a part-time or an intensive basis. The Multiply Project is led by the GoLearn team, but we also work with a wide range of partners including: FE colleges, businesses, voluntary organisations and community groups.

Learner Voice – Multiply

“I hated Maths at school and numbers really scared me. I wasn’t too sure about joining this project at the start, however once I started it and understood what I was doing. I really enjoyed it and did not feel overwhelmed. [Tutor] helped me understand how income and expenditure work and it made me think about my own. I would now like to enhance my skills more by doing further training. Maths does not scare me any more.””
