What our learners say:

An image of three adults seated around a table in a classroom, writing in notebooks and taking part in a group learning activity. As a mature student, returning to learning was daunting at first. It was difficult at times to juggle work, studies and family but after a couple of weeks, I got used to it and worked out how to balance my work, studies and personal life to reduce the chances of stress.

At first I felt nervous and anxious, mainly from the past experiences I had whilst learning maths with other providers, but the teaching style and techniques used by my tutor helped me to understand maths and overcome my fear, which gave me the confidence to continue the course.

The first thing I gained was to overcome my fear of maths which has affected me for many years. My anxiety reduced significantly. My self-confidence increased. I finally gained my Level 2 maths certificate which I never thought would ever happen.

Completing this course has certainly given me the confidence to use maths whilst shopping, handling bills, banking, taking measurements for curtains, carpet, etc., and as part of my role at work.

How to Apply

Before you enrol, you’ll complete an initial assessment. This helps us understand your current level so we can place you on the course that suits you best.

You’ll normally complete the assessment online using the link we email to you. Once you’ve done it, someone from our team will get in touch to talk through your results.

If completing it online isn’t possible for you, just call 0800 988 0308 or email adult.learning@leics.gov.uk, and we’ll arrange another option.

What is distance learning?

Our distance learning courses are live online classes. You will access the class using Microsoft Teams for Education and will need a laptop or desktop computer with a reliable internet connection. Smartphones and tablets are not suitable for these courses.

An online class is just like a real classroom. You will need to have a suitable, quiet space to learn in and your webcam and microphone on to speak with your tutor.

If you are on an exam-assessed course, you will take your exams at one of our designated learning centres.

If you are interested in a distance learning course and need more information or guidance, get in touch.

How will you be supported in the classroom?

You will be supported throughout your course by tutors who take time to understand individual needs and offer personalised guidance.

Support may include extra help with study skills, tailored feedback, or access to additional resources. Our aim is to create an inclusive, friendly environment where learners feel confident and able to succeed.

Where needed, you may also receive extra assistance such as one to one guidance, reasonable adjustments, or the use of assistive technology.

If you have physical disabilities, neurodivergent needs, visual or hearing impairments, or medical conditions you will be able to discuss your requirements during enrolment or with your tutor before the course starts, ensuring the right adjustments and resources are put in place to make learning accessible and comfortable.

Support with costs

We know that course fees alone are not the only financial costs learners face.

Our Learner Support Fund is available to help cover the hidden cost of learning like childcare, transport, and resources.

Learner Voice – Becs

Learning has helped me have more confidence with my work in school and to know I’d like to have a career in it. I hope to become a Learning Support Assistant. It really has given me a goal in life. I also now have a better understanding of both subjects, which has allowed me to understand and support my children with their homework.
