Accessible Library Video Tours: Learning for Independence Learners Lead the Way

Learners collaborate with Culture Leicestershire to create welcoming, accessible video tours of local libraries.

Learning for Independence learners have been working in partnership with LCC Culture Leicestershire to create a series of video-guided tours designed to help people explore Leicestershire Libraries before visiting in person. These accessible videos showcase the layout and facilities within each library, offering valuable reassurance for neurodiverse visitors or anyone who may feel anxious about new environments.

Learners have played an active role throughout the project – helping to plan the video content, sharing feedback, and even starring in the films themselves. Videos have now been created for Wigston, Hinckley, Birstall, Loughborough, Shepshed, Broughton Astley, and Syston Libraries, and are available to view on the individual library websites. Further videos for Blaby Library and Coalville Library, following its re-fit, are planned for next term.

Catherine Overton from Culture Leicestershire worked closely alongside learners on the project and shared the following reflections:

“The Library Accessibility Films Project has been a joy to work on, mainly because of the participants who have taken a starring role in them. All the learners have been so co‑operative and eager to get involved with everything asked of them. Hopefully they have got a lot out of it – giving their valued input to the film scripts, the opportunity to take part in a cultural project, a sense of achievement and the opportunity to see a professional filmmaker in action. The project wouldn’t have been the success it has been without their amazing contribution (it also helps that they all have wonderful smiles made for camera!). Hopefully, we can work in partnership with the learners again in future projects.”
