The Learning for Independence curriculum provides learning opportunities for adults with learning difficulties and/or disabilities across Leicestershire. Learning is structured around key areas topics such as health and wellbeing, work and volunteering, independence, creativity, communication, numeracy, and literacy. Each December we invite learners back into our centres to be formally presented with their certificates of learning, and to celebrate their achievements with friends and family.

Learners from Enderby, Market Harborough and Wigston joined us at Enderby Adult Learning Centre to watch a choreographed performance of ‘It’s a beautiful world’ complete with mince-pies made by learners on Independent Living Skills courses. Also on sale was a selection of wooden animal decorations made by Woodwork learners on the course based at Deacon & Hardy in Wigston, which were being sold to raise money to sponsor a Polar Bear with the WWF.

Learners from Hinckley and Coalville joined us in the Studio at the Century Theatre, Snibston and were entertained by the Drama and Performance group, performing to music chosen by the learners featuring songs such as ‘Reach’ by S Club 7 and ‘Happiness’ by ken Dodd, alongside other festive favourites.

Moira Adult Learning Centre welcomed learners from across Loughborough and Charnwood including learners from Roundhill Adult Learning Centre with a recorded performance of ‘Cinderella’ performed by the Drama and Performance learners before enjoying mince pies, sausage rolls, cakes and other refreshments made by the Catering and Customer Service learners.

Each event included a formal certificate presentation ceremony conducted by Amy McManus, Programme Manager for Learning for Independence, who later reflected on the events saying:

It is fantastic to see the progress of each and every learner who attends courses with us and congratulate them individually on their achievements at these celebration events. It is a highlight of the year for staff and learners alike and what is particularly special is the pride and enthusiasm with which learners celebrate not only their own successes but those of their friends and fellow learners.

Congratulations to all learners who achieved their qualifications in 2023 and thank-you to the Learning Delivery and Development Coordinators (Mel Sullivan, Nikolah Ibbetson and Debby Denega) for organising the celebration events If you, or someone you know, may be interested in joining a Learning for Independence course in 2024, get in contact with our team today to book your initial meeting and start your learning journey.
