GoLearn! Tutor Talk – Meet Astrid and Juan

Our service wouldn’t be what it is without the support and dedication on our Tutors. Astrid and Juan from our Modern Foreign Languages team, sat down together ahead of our Have a Go Month in September 2023, to discuss what it is like to learn a new language.

Juan Pardo is a Spanish Tutor with the Modern Foreign Languages Team and has been teaching Spanish since 2010. He started doing training for various organisations, as it seemed a good way to use his mother tongue and the skills learnt as a trainer to support learning. He always liked interacting with people, and learning from others too, so when the opportunity to teach came up he thought it was ideal! He has now been teaching Spanish for over seven years. In his ‘other life’ Juan works with the Communities Team in Leicestershire County Councils Chief Executives Department, helping to develop sustainable community initiatives that support residents of Leicestershire to be more resilient.

Astrid Kingscote has been working for LALS since 2019. She teaches German and Functional Skills English. Before she became a teacher, she worked in Procurement for over 10 years, which meant she spent her time being a professional shopper. She missed using her language skills and enjoyed guiding and training people as part of her role. She did a PGCE in 2016/17 and went to Schwäbisch Gmünd on an Erasmus programme. Prior to joining LALS, she taught a qualification linked to her previous day job. When the service was recruiting for a German Tutor, she jumped at the chance and has been here ever since.
